Louisiana is the only state in the country whose private legal system is based on civil law rather than the common law system, which stems from English law. Therefore, Louisiana law already seems different and odd to some people.
One thing Louisiana shares with other states is strange and weird laws. Every state has weird laws that are still in effect today. In most cases, states do not enforce these laws.
Our New Orleans personal injury lawyers are familiar with numerous weird and strange laws still in effect.
Ten of our favorite weird laws in Louisiana are:
1. Hogs Can Demand Cooked Meals
Jefferson Parish hog owners need to take notice. Hogs may only be fed garbage and other food that has been cooked on the premises. However, the law does not specify whether the food must taste good.
2. Practicing Voodoo Is Outlawed in New Orleans
New Orleans has a Voodoo Museum, numerous voodoo shops, and other attractions. Therefore, you may be surprised to learn that you could be fined for practicing Voodoo in New Orleans. The practice is illegal within the city limits.
3. Cursing Can Get You Arrested in Sulphur
Watch what you say on the telephone if you live in or visit Sulphur. It is illegal to use obscene language on a telephone call.
4. Don’t Insult Players at a Sports Event
It is illegal for fans to insult or disparage players at a sporting event. If police officers enforced this law, they may have run out of paper during the Super Bowl held at the New Orleans Caesars Superdome this year.
5. Want to Get Rid of Your Partner’s Goatee?
According to a law still in effect, a person must have a special license to wear a goatee in public. Some partners may wish this law were still enforced, but it is not.
6. False Teeth Can Be Weapons
It is difficult to think of someone being arrested for aggravated assault because of their false teeth. Yet, it could happen. False teeth are considered weapons, so biting someone when you have false teeth is against the law.
7. Eat Before Going to a Funeral
The sandwich limit at a wake for a funeral is three sandwiches. How lawmakers determined that three sandwiches were the limit is anyone’s guess.
8. Be Careful Where You Leave Your Alligator
Drivers understand they can get a ticket if they park in front of a fire hydrant. The law keeps hydrants accessible in case of a fire. However, tying an alligator to a New Orleans fire hydrant is also illegal. Be careful where you park your pet.
9. Don’t Throw Condoms at Mardi Gras
Riders on floats throw beads and other items into the crowd. However, it is illegal for float riders to throw condoms into the crowd. Again, it is anyone’s guess why lawmakers decided throwing condoms from a float should be illegal.
10. Fake Wrestling Is Illegal in Louisiana
If the state enforced this weird law, many wrestling fans would be highly disappointed. The entertainment industry would also lose millions of dollars in revenue if Louisiana began arresting people for participating in fake wrestling matches.
A Few More We Could Not Resist Including
A few more weird laws that made our list of favorites include:
- You must close and lock your bedroom windows if you snore.
- You can be fined $3,000 and serve up to ten years in prison for stealing a person’s alligator or crawfish. We take crawfish and alligators seriously in Louisiana.
- Bringing a snake within 200 yards of a Mardi Gras parade is illegal.
- A court may fine you $25,000 and sentence you to 25 years in jail if you ingest bodily fluids, including blood, during any type of ritual.
If you or a family member has been injured because of another party’s negligence or wrongdoing, including breaking one of the above laws, you could be entitled to compensation for your damages.
